Self Coaching Through Decision Making

Do you have a big decision to make and have no idea how you are going to do it?

For everyone there comes a time when there is a tough decision to make. CEOs, leaders, parents and everyone have had that time when there might be a tough call to make.

I work with many people who are going through a decision making process. That “moment of choice” When you choose which way to go, or choose not to make a decision at that moment.

Here are some self-coaching questions which can help you through this process. If you have a colleague, friend or family member who is having an issue making a decision this may be able to help them.

Do you have to make the decision now?

  • Can you wait?

  • Is there more information to be gathered?

  • Do you need time to sit with the decision?

  • If you act now what might be the effects of making the decision’s outcome? Positive and negative?

What is stopping you from making the decision?

  • Is there something that is stopping you from making the decision?

  • How is this affecting you?

  • Can you/ do you want to overcome this?

  • Are you comfortable with this situation?

  • If not how do you move forward? Even just one step?

What happens when you go one way or the other?

It can be useful for some decision making processes to sit in each scenario and work out what will happen for each direction. Write the answers down and reflect. You can consider the following:

  • What effect the outcome has on you.

  • What happens to other people this affects

  • What are the outcomes for the situations positive and negative?

Is there someone you can talk to about this who is unbiased?

Having a completely unbiased listener that can ask the above questions can help and delve deeper. This person is not here to offer advice as hard as it may be for them but to help you talk through all of the above questions. Help you internally discover what YOU really want to do to move forward that one step. A fully qualified external coach can also help with this.

All of the above will help you on your way to moving in one direction or the other, or sitting with the situation and waiting until it is the right time to make your move. To talk to me about how executive coaching can help message me at caroline@successCL.com
